Interview with the singing researcher Prof. Hancox

Singing Groups in Hospitals and Health Centres

Beschreibung des derzeit laufenden Forschungsprojektes 2011/2012:

Singing Groups in Hospitals and Health Centres and their Effects on Wellbeing and Health
Prepared by Wolfgang Bossinger and Prof. Stephen Clift

Leitung/Leadership:
Prof. Stephen Clift, Professor of Health Education, Sidney de Haan Research Centre for Arts and Health, Canterbury Christ Church University, UK and Wolfgang Bossinger, Projektleiter Singende Krankenhäuser, Klinikum Christophsbad Göppingen, Director of Singing Hospitals.

Aim of the study
The study aims to provide a description of established singing groups in hospital and healthcare settings in 12 selected hospital and 6 healthcare settings in Germany. Information will be gathered on the history, aims, participants and repertoire of the singing groups through interviews with the group leaders. The study will also investigate the perceived benefits of participating in singing groups in hospitals and health centres by means of a self-completion questionnaire. Systematic reviews of previous research on singing, wellbeing and health have been undertaken by the Sidney De Haan Research Centre (Clift, Hancox, Staricoff, and Whitmore, 2008; Clift, Nicol, Raisbeck and Whitmore, under review). To date, no research studies have been undertaken with singing groups established in hospitals and health care centres.

The study will be based on the World Health Organization’s definition of health (WHO, 1946) as ‘a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely an absence of illness or infirmity’ and will use a cross-nationally validated quality of life instrument developed by the WHO Quality of Life project (the WHOQOL-BREF). The study will use similar methods and questionnaires as in the study Choral Singing, Wellbeing and Health (Clift, Hancox, Morrison, et al., 2008, 2009, 2010a,b) which surveyed members of existing choirs and choral societies in Australia, England and Germany. Part of the study will be to compare the findings from the previous study with choral singers with those from participants in hospital singing groups.
